Releasing Players from a Travel Team
Information for Team Officials

With few exceptions, players cannot be released from a Travel Team before the end of the seasonal year (August 31) unless they wish to be released. If a player wishes to be released, you must take action to accommodate the request.

MSYSA policy requires that team officials take prompt action on a request to release a player. The team official must present all necessary paperwork to the team registrar within five days after receiving the MSYSA Player/Team Status Form from the player or parent.

To release a player from a Travel Team (remove the player from the team roster) actions must be taken by the player and parent, the team official, and the team registrar:

  1. The player and parent or guardian must complete the top portion of the MSYSA Player/Team Status Form, which identifies the player and the status with respect to additional teams and/or State Cup teams. The player must fill in all requested information, sign and date this section and fill in the reason for the release. It is also required that the player's parent or guardian sign and date this section. (See bottom of this page to obtain form)

  2. The player and parent/guardian submit the completed form to the team official.

  3. The team official must make arrangements with the team registrar to bring the form, the player pass, and the team roster in to have the player removed.

  4. The team registrar removes the player from the team roster; returns the updated original roster to the team official; and retains the player pass until needed by the player.
The release is complete when the team registrar removes the player from the roster (Step 4); after this step the player is eligible to be rostered to another team.

Do not provide the player pass to the player. It must be provided to the team registrar for the release to be completed. The registrar retains the player pass until the player takes action to join another team.

Before accepting the Player/Team Status Form, please review it carefully to assure all required information (including the reason for release) and signatures are present. The player or parent may ask you to sign and date a copy of the submitted Player/Team Status Form which they will keep. This is a legitimate request -- the date you enter along with your signature is the start of your five day action period.

For the registrar to process the release, you must provide the following documents (number of copies may vary according to league rules):

  • Original roster plus four copies
  • Original Player/Team Status Form plus three copies
  • Player Pass
  • Stamped envelope addressed to the player's parent or guardian
