SPARTANS FC, U17B
US Youth Soccer Presidents Cup Champion
The U17 boys were flogged 5-2 in their first round game, probably weary from the road trip. The second match was against a California squad, and everyone was wary of that opponent, even though we knew they lost their first game. However, the Spartans trounced them 4-1. Their third match was against a very strong CASL team, which had won their first match and tied the team that beat the Maryland boys. Now, fully aware that the path to the championship match could only be paved with wins, they “upped” their form and beat that NC team 2-0. What a feeling of delight!
Now, everything was in place for the championship match against their first opponent in the round robin. Rather than approach the Indiana team with the humility of an underdog, the Spartans mounted a spirited attack from the first whistle. While blocking forays into their half and having a little luck - this time - on their side, and supported by brilliant playmaking by Santiago Orbes, the central midfielder, the Spartans scored 4 beautiful goals to Indiana’s 0. It could have been uglier. Region I’s U17 boys hit the post twice and had 2 balls trickle inches wide of the back post as we held our collective breaths.
Both teams were in disbelief at the final whistle. One expected to walk through the match, given the results of the first encounter. The other went in with a prayer led by their star striker, Eric, who was injured and could not play in this match.
Congratulations to the Calverton Spartans FC, U17 Boys!
